Nanjing Medical University (NMU) was founded in Zhenjiang in 1934 when it was called National Jiangsu Medical College. It was moved to Nanjing in 1957 and renamed Nanjing Medical College. In 1962, it joined the first group of medical universities to offer six-year programs, and was approved to confer doctoral and master’s degrees in 1981. In 1993, it was renamed Nanjing Medical University with the approval of the State Educational Committee. NMU is one of the top medical universities in China.
NMU has two locations, Wutai campus and Jiangning campus. Wutai campus, located next to the downtown Wutai Shan Sports Center, covers an area of 80,000 m², is the educational center for NMU’s Scientific Research and Postgraduate Education. The Jiangning Campus is located in the “Jiangning District Campus City”, covering an area of 980,000 m², Jiangning campus is the Educational Center for NMU’s undergraduate programs; it was opened in September 2003. NMU consists of 13 Secondary Schools and 1 Independent School, and has 8 Affiliated Hospitals and over 30 Teaching Hospitals in Nanjing, Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Huai’an, Shanghai and Hangzhou. |

NMU has a strong faculty team of over 1,400 registered members, including over 600 professional teaching members. NMU’s Library is both the Central Medical Library in Jiangsu Province and the Medical Literature Center of the University Literature Service System. The university library has a collection of over 940,000 volumes, including over 4,700 categories of periodicals in English and Chinese, Eleven categories of academic periodicals, such as ‘Journal of Nanjing Medical University, ‘Clinical Dermatology’, ‘Journal of Clinical Psychiatry’, and ‘Jiangsu Medical’ are sponsored by the university. Besides, the establishment of digital campus brought convenience to the teaching, scientific research, management and study. |

NMU owns 2 national best courses, 4 provincial best courses, 20 provincial excellent courses and 2 provincial excellent course-groups, 1 provincial brand specialties, and 1 provincial feature specialty. Many teaching materials have own national and provincial awards. The university has own popularity on the enrollment and employment achievements from all walks of life. During the 10th five-year plan, Nanjing Medical University has acquired great breakthrough on subject construction. The structure and arrangement of subjects have been optimized and achieved perfection. Scientific Research and Awards: |

During the 10th five-year plan, 1 national key laboratory nurturing base, 1 key laboratory at the ministry level, 2 key laboratories co-established by the ministry and the province, 7 provincial key laboratories and engineering research centers were established. The university has won 530 research programs above provincial level, among which were 1 national key scientific and research program, 3 national ‘863 programs’, 3 ‘973 programs’, and 119 national natural scientific programs, which was 4.4 times as many as those during the 9th five-year plan. We have won 877 awards for scientific achievements at all levels, including 3 national awards and 112 provincial awards. The number of dissertations cited by SCI has been increased from 17 in 2001 to over 100 in 2005, including one doctoral dissertation as one of the ‘Top National 100 Excellent Doctor’s Dissertations’. |

At present, the number of full time students in NMU is around 10,000. Recently, Nanjing Medical University takes an active part in extensive exchange and cooperation by virtue of great opportunity of the Internationalization of higher education.
The University has established bilateral relationship on academic exchange, and cooperation on scientific research and talents cultivation between medical schools and scientific research institutions in USA, Japan, France and Australia. Since 2002, the university restored to enroll international students and students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, India, Nepal and Pakistan. At present, the total number is about 800 since the foundation of the School of International Education in 2005. |
