The Saratov State Medical University is one of the oldest higher education institutions in the South of Russia. Established in 1909 by order of His Majesty Emperor Nicholas II, the University since its foundation date has followed the classical pattern of medical education which combines a strong theoretical basis in various areas of knowledge with the subsequent practical training at many clinical departments. Since then the University has become one of the largest medical schools of Russia. A great number of outstanding scientists and physicians, who worked at the University, have contributed immensely both to the development of the University and to that of the medical science on the whole. |

Today Saratov State Medical University rightfully holds a leading position in the rating of 47 medical universities of Russia. The University is acknowledged by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is included in the WHO World Directory of Medical Schools. Saratov State Medical University is licensed and accredited by the state for preparing specialists in the area of Medicine. University graduates receive the national degree of education that confirms their competence and skills to be in accordance with the state educational standards prescribed for their specialties. According to the rating published by the “Formula Cariery” (Career Formula) magazine in 2003, SSMU holds the 17th position among the 100 best higher education establishments in Russia, and the 2nd one among medical universities. On the Academy’s course completion students receive a degree with the international standard appendix. Programs and syllabuses that are used in the course of training are those recommended by the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME).

In 2004, the Independent Public Council awarded Saratov State Medical University a “100 Best Universities of Russia” gold medal, and SSMU Rector Professor P. V. Glybochko received the honorable sign of “The Rector of the Year”. The University is situated in one of the most beautiful towns on the Volga River. Saratov is a large industrial and cultural center of Russia. It is often referred to as the “city of students”: lots of Russian and international students study at its 12 higher education institutions. There is the friendliest atmosphere in town, and it is easy to find new friends coming from different parts of the Earth. |

At present, there are about 5000 students from 25 countries studying at the University. About 600 highly qualified doctors graduate from Saratov State Medical University every year. |

Faculty and Training: |
|
The University consists of 5 faculties: Faculty of General Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Preventive Medicine, Pediatrics, and also the Institute of Nursing. Training is carried out in Russian and in English. Competent specialists, among whom there are more than 30 Full Members and Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Social Sciences, as well as of international academies, are heads of the university’s departments. Ph.D. and Professors of Medicine, Honored Doctors of the Russian Federation share their knowledge and experience with students. Most of the university’s international graduates who return to their homeland successfully pass their national qualification exams, which once again prove the high standard of training and the professionalism of the teachers at Saratov State Medical University. The University’s potential in science and research is great. The largest clinics of the South Russia e.g. Clinic for Skin and Venereal Diseases, the Clinic for Professional Pathology and Hematology, the Dental Clinic work in close cooperation with the University. It is there that students work as trainees, getting used to the complex working rhythm of the medical institutions, acquiring the essential skills and the vital experience of a doctor’s job. |

The University’s international activities are being developed in two directions. They are training international students and are launching international projects in the areas of research and practical medicine. Many of the university’s academics go to present their papers on the new discoveries at international conferences and seminars. For 11 years by now, the University maintains close contacts with medical higher education establishments of the USA. During this time, a joint project in arthroscopy has been launched, and several conferences on medical education and programs to reform the health care system in Russia and the US have been held. University students travel to the USA for a two-month training period every year. There is a constant exchange of postgraduate students, too. |

| Accommodation Guaranteed: | ||
All international students are guaranteed to get accommodated in comfortable hostels, where they share a room with one or two fellow-students. Unlike student hostels in many other countries, the Russian ones have a kitchen on every floor for the students to be able to cook whatever they wish. There are fitness clubs, cafes and a library next to the hostel buildings, that is, everything one needs to live and study and have some fun. |
