Shanghai University of Technology, Shanghai University of Science & Technology, Shanghai Institute of Science & Technology and the former Shanghai University. Shanghai University of Technology was once Shanghai Institute of Technology founded in 1960, and in 1972 the institute merged with Shanghai Institute of Mechanical with its headquarter on Shanghai Institute of Technology Campus. The two broke up in 1979 and was renamed Shanghai Industrial University with the admission of Chinese Education Ministry.

The former Shanghai University was founded in 1983, including School of Liberal Arts, School of International Business, School of Fine Arts, School of Engineering and School of Laws. These schools respectively came from part of Fudan University, part of merged Shanghai Foreign Studies University and Shanghai Mechanics College, Shanghai Fine Arts College, part of merged East China Normal University and Shanghai Science & Technology University, Shanghai Laws College. Shanghai Science & Technology College was once Shanghai No. 2 Science & Technology School established in 1959, and the school became a college in 1981. When the four universities and colleges decided to merge into one in 1994, the name of the school was the calligraphy by Chinese President Jiang Zemin, and Chinese Prime Minister Li Peng wrote an inscription:"Carry forward the traditions and train men for profession." Vice Prime Minister Li Lanqing also inscribed: "Make unremitting efforts to improve oneself and to reform, take advantage of the merger, improve the quality of teaching and train more talented people for our country." All these inscriptions have profound implications.

In 1920s, there was a Shanghai University in Shanghai. Founded in 1922, it was the outcome of the cooperation between the Communist Party and the Kuomintang. Yuyouren, a member of KMT, worked as the president of the university, Yundaiying was in charge of general affairs, Quqioubai was the dean of Sociology Department, and many other CPC leaders and famous scholars worked there. However, Jiangjieshi and other KMT right-wing members forced to close the university after their counterrevolutionary coup. With a cautious study style and strong revolutionary atmosphere but a rather short history, the university contributed a group of useful people to the cause of Chinese liberation and development, including Lishuoxun, father of Lipeng and a revolutionary martyr as well, and former Chinese President Yangshangkun, etc. At that time, people can say it proudly that Shanghai University was the top school in liberal arts, while Huangpu (Military School) in military training.

Shanghai University, one of the key institutions of higher learning in Shanghai directly under the Municipal Government and on the list of national "Project 211" in China. The president of the university is Professor WeiChang Chien, famous scientist of China, the Former Vice-chairman of the People's Political Consultative Conference of China and an Academician of Chinese academy of Science. Shanghai University is a comprehensive university with rich diversity of disciplines, it consists of 20 colleges and schools ,2 university-supervised departments and 1 physical education department at the moment, offering 58 undergraduate programs, 86 postgraduate programs, 20 doctoral programs and 9 post-doctoral programs covering Dynamic, Metallurgy, Electronic & Communication, Mathematics , Materials Science and Information Engineering. In addition, we also have 14 key disciplines and 3 key laboratories on the municipal level have been set up in three batches. It has a faculty of 5,484 , among whim more than 380 are full professors and more than 780 are associate professors. Of these professors, 7 are academicians of Chinese Academy of Science and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 175 doctor supervisors and 13 national-leveled young specialists of science and technology of their achievements.

There have been set up more than 72 research institutes and research centers, among which the New & High Tech Development Garden is approved by the State Science Commission. Sticking to the strategy of getting active involvement in the economic construction, following the advanced level in the world and developing the scientific research the university has obtained not only a host of significant scientific and technological results in the field of applied research but also a group of domestically and internationally influential fruits in the field of fundamental research. Within the recent years, the university ranks advanced in terms of scientific research funds, achievements awarded and the number of the academic thesis. And to further the improvement of its courses construction and teaching quality the university adds the new scientific results to its teaching.

The capabilities of our scientific research belong to the domestic universities with advanced level. We have established 30 new and hi-tech developing parks, research institutes and research centers. Adhering to the principle of boosting economy, following the world's advanced level and developing scientific research, we have achieved great success in the field of applied research and basic research both home and abroad. In recent years, our research funds, number of award-winning achievements and number of scientific papers all ranks high among the domestic universities. We put great emphasis on the transformation of scientific and technological achievements and substantiation of the contents of teaching to promote teaching quality. Shanghai University is closely linked with all walks of life in our society. Ever since the reform and opening to the outside world, we have strengthened the ties with society in the fields of training and research. We have established the College of Life and Science with the local research Institute of China Scientific Institute; we have enrolled graduate students majoring in literature, economy, law and so on with Shanghai Social and Scientific Institute. We have also set up the College of Film and Television and Art Technology supported by the circle of Shanghai film and television and broadcasting. Furthermore, we have invited a number of famous scholars and masters as advisers, part-time professors and lecture professors.

We began to enroll English-teaching foreign students, graduates and doctors in the year of 1998. Nowadays there are altogether more than 1000 foreign students in Shanghai University. In recent years, Shanghai University has achieved greatly in school-running with foreign universities, such as the Sydney College of Industry and Commerce of Shanghai University jointly run by the Sydney College of Science and Technology in Australia.
